INFORMATION FOR POLICE SERVICES BOARDS

The role of the OIPRD is to build the trust and confidence of both the police and community in the public complaints system. The OIPRD wants to ensure we have a system that is accessible, objective and transparent, and one that will resolve complaints in a manner that is fair to all parties.

We are asking police services boards to work with us during the complaint process. The OIPRD will need you to review complaints in cases where a complainant disagrees with the decision of a Police Chief regarding a policy or service complaint and also to review conduct complaints about Police Chiefs and Deputy Chiefs. This may mean holding hearings and reporting decisions.

Police services boards may also be requested to submit performance audits on the administration of public complaints.

With your cooperation, the OIPRD will provide a valuable service to the community and to the police.
