TORONTO – Due to the numerous calls and inquiries from the media and members of the public in relation to Ms. Regis Korchinski-Paquet’s death, and the wide distribution of a video on social media related to a May 2019 incident which was the subject of an OIPRD investigation, the Director is issuing this public statement:
The OIPRD Director, Stephen Leach, does not comment on press coverage of incidents involving allegations of police misconduct because he may later be tasked with investigating these incidents. Furthermore, the Director does not want to interfere with investigations conducted by the police or the Special Investigations Unit, or compromise present or anticipated criminal proceedings.
Ms. Regis Korchinski-Paquet’s death is a tragedy and the Director expresses his condolences to her family. The Director cannot respond to inquiries from the media or public about Ms. Regis Korchinski-Paquet’s death without jeopardizing his neutrality and ability to investigate related public complaints.
The OIPRD has also received numerous calls and inquiries related to a May 2019 incident requesting that the OIPRD release its investigative report or comment on its findings. Pursuant to Section 95 of the Police Services Act, the Director cannot release the report without the consent of the parties, including the complainant.
